Mandala

Another peaceful day in Enrichville, great master Darryn is teaching again. One quarter of the citizens of Enrichville have come to listen to his new maths-based topic, 'Mandala'. Mandala is a Budhist way of worshipping their gods. They make a Mandala out of sand and when they finish it (which is like a week after they start), they do their worshipping and when it is over, they sweep it up and put the sand in a river as an offering and to spread it around the world.

Above is a traditional budhist mandala made out of sand.

To make a mandala you put a dot in the middle of the page as the "seed". You use shapes and letters to create a masterpiece. But don't think. Only add what comes into your brain first. There is no mistake, and nothing that will make it look better.

Here is the creations I made today:

REMINDER: I USED PENCIL, NOT SAND.

Global Citizenship

Once in Enrichville, great master Darryn was talking to all the boys and girls about global citizenship and about how you can stay safe using online technologies and what happens to all that personal information when you put it into an account, like Animal Jam or Facebook or Yahoo! mail.

This is what great master Darryn had to say:

Your personal information starts when you are 5 months into birth, lets use Andy as an example name to show you what I mean. Andy gets a photo in his mums belly 5 months into birth. Andy's parents put the image on Facebook, many people screenshot it and put it on more websites, and so on and so on. When Andy is born he gets more and photos taken and a lot of them go onto his parents Facebook page. More photos get screenshotted and put onto more websites. The same happens when and first stands, crawls, walks and talks. When Andy grows up he signs up for Moshi Monsters. He put a lot of personal information he does not need as the required information is put with an asterix beside the question for the information. When Andy grows up he signs up for Amazon where he buys books for studying. He uses his credit card details to buy the books and his address to get his books delivered. He gets married and more and more pictures get copied and emailed. When Andy has a new baby, the same thing goes on again.

Very scary thought, huh?

My Favourite thing in the world

EDITING!!!!!!!!! My favourite thing in the world. It's  when you do something that took you a whole year (very true), you've worked hard on (very true) and then the teacher comes and say's "It's good, but I can't read that part, so add a white space behind the text to make the text a bit clearer.". Ah, The three words, 'Do it again', in a sentence just absolutely makes me, and the whole world furious. So that is why editing is my favourite thing in the world. (Major sarcasm included)

So, it started on a nice peaceful day in Enrichville, Max was working on his passion project, Jake was working on his passion project, Nathan was worki... Nathan was just being Nathan. Well, Jake had FINALLY, after like three weeks, finished EDITING his story (Bobby Jojo and the three sheep), And emailing it to himself, and he had copied all his pages onto his desktop on the computer, and had started moving them into his pages document, which was to be printed, then EDITED AGAIN, and then Jake has to do the boring, yet fun, process over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, and again and again and again and again, until the WHOLE THING is perfect.

Well, where was I yes, and the Darryn comes along and says "I can't read that, you know in comics they have those text boxes, why don't you try that?'' Then Jake's heart sank. He went back to pic collage to do most of the pages and put text boxes in them. If you're wondering what text boxes are they are either what you put text in on a computer or a white space behind te text to make it stand out.

So Jake continued doing that until Max J comes on and goes "Hey, dragon adventures level 6 is done, check it out" so Jake went off to check out Max's game.

Next fortninght Jake is hoping to finish his book, and not have to do any more editing.

Sometimes things don't go the way they should....

One day, in Enrichville, there was a challenge, for whoever could make the best chair in 40 minutes out of newspaper and masking tape. You were to get into five groups, of five people, with at least one girl in the team. The chair had to hold a wooden frog without collapsing. The team that was going to win was the team with Jake, Max N, Jayden, Hyrum and Isabella.

They got off to a great start, each making beams and Hyrum with the tape in his hand. The beams were made of newspaper, and advertising paper. The team's plan was to make something different, a triangular shaped chair, which they were hoping to get extra credit for the thought put into it. 15 minutes to go when good old cheeky Max J comes along to tell them it is not a chair if it hasn't got a back to lean on. So the team made the back until Max J came along and told them if our chair was wooden and life size, people would pay 50 dollars for it. The team was quite happy with that "compliment" until he said his team's chair would be worth 2 million dollars. The team just smiled and thought, "Yeah, whatever" and just continued building. The team was a bit worried that Max's teams chair was going to be better than theirs, so they sent Jake to go and check out the chairs. He went to the Max's chair and was greeted by Wilson saying his chair was rather more of a "chofa" (a chair and a sofa at the same time). Then Darryn comes over to the chofa and says it looks "chugly". You can figure that one out.

It's judging time and the cruel judges come up. Turns out only four chairs were completed. Three out of four chairs held the frog. It's down to two now. But they chose the OTHER chair! The only reason why is because the other chair is square instead of triangle. But Darryn butts in. He said our chair is more simple and strong, considering the winners chair actually fell apart when the judges lifted it up.

Superframers! What does it mean?

Hello, today was week 6 of term 3 for Enrich this year. Today I went to a patterns in art workshop which is going to be running for the next 2 million years (a couple of weeks). We went for a walk in town until we got to SUPERFRAMERS The Bank AND Art Gallery. So... WHAT DOES IT MEAN!?
Superframers is a very cool art gallery where you can buy AND look at artwork. Wow, that's pretty awesome considering only most, or even all of Invercargills art galleries let you do that. WOW. Superframers is one of a kind! Yes, they are, they let you buy things, look at things and they even have a structual piece of art that looks like a windmill made out of 100 year old fence posts. But insted of 1, the have 3! But anyway the idea of this project was to write down on a white  sheet of paper pieces of patterns in art we saw, what we liked and disliked. I even managed to get my hands on a SUPERFRAMERS BUSINESS CARD! You must be so jealous right now but you can see some images af it right here.

AND because this is a special Superframers edition you get TWO FREE random images!

AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!? THE CIRCUS IS IN TOWN!!!!!!...........  In about 3 years :(

Well, the circus IS coming, but in 2-3 years. Awww, you're gonna be so jealous when you finish reading this post. Well, today one character from 'Circus Aotearoa' came into Enrich after a 7 month journey with the circus in the North Island of New Zealand. She came in and showed us some clips of the circus she's in and fed us some information of becoming a circus performer and what you do in the circus.

When you think about the circus,  you usually think about animals doing trick and things like that. But no, Circus Aotearora is animal-free and is just people doing flips and stuff like that.

Did you know? The other school I go to is having a teachers-only day today, but I don't care because they can't watch the circus until 2016!

Also, heres your weekly ramdom image!

What's up people of the world! Today I went to a migration workshop where I learnt about migration patterns. We learnt how the US are sending people back to the country they came from because they are coming into their land illegally Without a passport or going through the government. Instead, these people are coming in from Iran etc. to the US because they want a better lifestyle than the lifestyle they are getting at their previous countries. They are coming in from boats and are risking their lives because they could fall overboard or become sharkbait. So these people must hate their lives because they would prefer to risk coming all the way to this other country and get told to go all the way back and possibly die instead of staying at their home land.

At the migration patterns workshop I learnt that certain countries aren't allowing people into their land because of population

And I also found this random picture I hope you like it : )

How am I doing my passion project?

Hmm, so are you wondering how I am doing my passion project? Well, I'm doing it like this. I am also using an ipad for this work as well. I am  using two very good, very helpful apps. They are Pic Collage and Book Creator. Pic collage is an app which I am doing my backround/photos on. You can add photos off the internet and photos from your ipad. You can also add text and take a photo. You can edit your photos by enhancing them, drawing on them and clipping them. I then send my work to myself  ( from the ipad to the computer ) and save my work to the photos library.

Then I go onto the Book Creator app and push the button with a cross on it. It then comes up with add photos, add text and add sound. I push the button add photos and it comes up with photos and pic collage. I push the button Pic Collage and add the photo I want to use. Then I go to the mail app and find the message I sent from the computer containing my story.I copy the piece of writing I want to use and then go to the Book Creator app and push the button with the cross on it and push add text. I then paste the copied text and paste it. I then push done and there is one page of your book!

I have learnt that I should always send the work which I've done on the ipad to myself so nobody deletes it.

The serious newspaper!

Hello, we don't have much time so I'm only allowed to do a two line blog. Well, I'm writing a newspaper for Enrich. Not I, but a bunch of people. My projects have been a dog report, and a baking page. Yes, and I've been working really hard, as you can see below...

Page Breaks

Hello people of the the world! It's a special week this week because it's gifted awareness week. I bet you knew that but some of you need a little reminding...

So, what did I do today? Good question, because I don't know! Well, thats the end of my post. NOOOO! I actually just remembered, we had passion time. Do you know what I'm doing for passion time? Because if you don't, please read my older posts about what I'm doing for passion time.

For passion time today I used an i-Pad AND the computer for my Bobby Jojo story. Well, for the start of passion time I filled in my mistakes and put in the PAGE BREAKS, and near the end I used an app on the i-Pad called PicCollage to make the cover for the book. But sadly, the i-Pad didn't have the advanced search set on it so I had to use the computer on advanced search to make sure I used the correct images so it wouldn't be a copyrighted image.

LIVEsketch

"Now we will look at this app", said Darryn, teacher of the i-Pad workshop. The app was Livesketch. It is an app which you can sketch/draw on. BUT it has a very cool twist to it. Darryn calls it the 'spidery effect'. It is when you put a line close to each other it looks like it joins. It's also great for scary pictures, as shown below.

For passion time today I used the Livesketch app to draw my policeman with traffic light pants. He is for my story called 'Bobby Jojo'. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BOBBY JOJO PLEASE READ MY OTHER BOBBY JOJO POSTS.

Bobby Jojo And The Three Sheep

I'm sitting here at Enrich, thinking of a title to put on my blog. See, it's really hard to find a good title because we're not allowed to have something like : Scratch, Week 3 at Enrich or Passion Time. See? This is what you have to put up with every day because its like being bossed around by your parents every day. But it's different here. Yes, I can't think of a title so this is what I'm going to use:

Bobby gets changed (Duna, dunana, duna).

Today was one of those days which we have Passion Time. Yes, good old Passion Time. Probably the second, maybe first best and most exciting thing at Enrich. The only other thing that it battles with is the Technology Challenges.

Yes, what I did. Today I edited my story named: Bobby Jojo and the three sheep. I had to make a second line for every sentence so I could send it to Katie and she would check the story. I am currently drawing some of my pictures I'm going to use like a pedal car for the police man and for Bobby because at the end of my story Bobby tries to escape using Baby sheep's ride-on car. And the policeman chases after him in a police model of the ride-on car.

Chess - branching out

Today we had student led workshops and I chose the chess workshop run by Luke. Luke taught us how to  start a game and end a game as well. To start the the game one of the best possible ways is to have your pawns infront of the king and queen out two spaces. Then, you need to put the pawns beside those two pawns out one space. After that you should move your knights out so they are infront of the pawns that are blocking the rook from getting out. This is a very good start because you can castle, the pawns are protected by the pawns behind them, and the knights are out which are very good for the middle of the game.  I hope to use some of these new moves in my next game.

He also taught us how to check mate with a king and a queen. At some points Luke
was unhelpful when he was cheating while we were playing him.

Bobsquad

Hooray! I've finally finished my story!

Read the outline below:

Bobby Jojo and the Three Sheep

(For more information please look at my previous posts.)
I've even found my character for Bobby Jojo and I've found the picture for the police, ride-on police car, Baby sheep's ride-on car and the Sheep family. I'm currently drawing bobby Jojo and hes almost finished. He looks like this:           ---------->                               -------------->

Yes, very weird, but he's pretty good for my story. And the police guy is going to be riding in a ride-on car when Bobby is riding down the road in Baby sheep's ride on car! They drive down the hill/road for so long that they end up on the highway. But sadly for Bobby the highway doesn't have any down hills so the policman catches him, takes him to the sheep's house and questions him.

Bobby's punishment is to pay for Baby sheep's ride-on car and to never bother the sheep family again.

So if you see poor Bobby around, be sure to give him some kiwifruit.

Bobby's almost done!

Hellooo! Hope you enjoyed the holidays! Today I continued with my story called Bobby Jojo and the three sheep. You have probably heared of him with my previous posts but if you don't heres a warning:

WARNING! DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T READ MY PREVIOUS POST OF BOBBY JOJO BECAUSE YOU WILL BE LOST IN THE SERIES OF POSTS ABOUT HIM

There, hope you have read the previous post.

Okay, I'm almost finished my story. The ending is quite funny when the police come and Bobby jumps into Baby Sheeps ride-on car and starts speeding down the hill. He soon comes to the highway but it has no hill at all so the police come and arrest him.

So if you see Bobby please give him some kiwifruit.

Bobby Jojo

Oh, Bobby! You messed up again!

Helloooo people! Today was the last day at Enrich for term 1. Aawwww. But today we did passion time. Yaaay!

My passion time project is a story I'm writing calle Bobby Jojo and the three sheep. My story is about this guy named Bobby Jojo and he is very clumsy. He goes to a sheep's house because he smells this very nice smell, which is New Zealands delicious kiwifruit muffins. The sheep leave to go for a walk because they are waiting for their kiwifruit muffins to cool down (and their hot orange juice). So Bobby eats one of the boiling muffins, silly Bobby! Because the muffins are hot his mouth becomes very hot. Then he sees the orange juice. He thinks it is cold so he drinks a little so they didn't  notice that it was gone. The juice was very hot, so he burns his mouth even more.

Yes, that is where I'm up to at the moment. Yes, Bobby is very silly. Do you think he will somehow learn from his mistakes?

The Pattern Fieldtrip

'Snap, snap', 'scribble, scribble'. Today we went on a fieldtrip to Queens Park, Countdown, The Library and Wachner place and all around town. We had to take photos and write down some of the patterns we saw. The different typs of patterns are beauty, order, strength and survivability. I was partners with Luke on the trip. Luke wrote down the types of patterns we saw and I took the photos. If you didn't know, there are lots of patterns, in fact, MILLIONS of patterns, no, there are patterns EVERYWHERE. Yes, they are all around you. Like wheels on car is for beauty, and the stripes on a zebra are for survivability. But its not like you're going to see one of those around town anyway. Well, you shouldn't see one around town unless the zebra is blind and swam from Africa to New Zealand. But anyway, I think I've run out of letters so all I can say is.....          The end.

Passion Time

What is your passion? Can you use this time wisely? How will you display it?

These are some of the questions we got asked when we were deciding what our passion projects would be. I thought, and thought and thought. I could not think of what I could do for a passion project. That's when a lightbulb flashed in my head. I could finish off my story from last year, "The unheared story of Goldilocks and the three.... Okay, I might not know what to put there yet, as I need a pretty large NZ animal for my bears. I'm thinking about tuatara, na, too small. If you have any ideas what I could use it would be more than helpful. My story is like Goldilocks and the three bears, but in a NZ way, and, It's about Goldilocks's aspect of the scene. Like her mothers away to get some wood for the fire and she runs out of kiwifruit so she goes to see the           to get some kiwifruit and so on. To display my story I will probably make an animation or something and enter it in the MADE Awards.

The realm of Blokus

Defend your tower, defeat your enemies and win in this very challenging game called...

THE REALM OF BLOKUS. I, Jake the jaguar, Miro the monkey and Max F the meerkat are in battle against Blokus the bat. To play you must be able to keep your territory, get into others domains and take their village. We are a team named J.M.M trying desperately to try and defeat Blokus. The rules of the game are to make sure your pieces are always diagonal to your other pieces. Your pieces can touch others pieces as well. The aim of the game is to try and trap your opponents, ( which in our case is Blokus) so they cannot put another piece in place. Today, the J.M.M team finally defeated Blokus and earned the placings of village knights for our bravery and thinking.

Chess

Today I moved from 2nd last to 4th on the chess leader board by beating Max F in a game of chess. Max was very hard to beat because he had a lot of strategies and was always trying to kill my queen. I checkmated him with 2 queens becaue I got my pawn to the other end to get the 2nd queen. At the end of the game there was only our kings, my 2 queens and another one of my pawns.

Patterns

Today is the second day at Enrich for 2013! Today we found out what our concept for the year is, if you bothered to read the title you would already know. Our concept is patterns, which means we will be learning what all the definitions are and how people/humans use them. For example, a black and white striped pattern may not be good for a zebra if its in the desert on its own. But if its in a huge herd of zebras the lion/predator won't be able to catch the zebra as its focused on all the zebras instead of having its eyes locked onto one of them. Its the same with sharks and fish, and people trying to shoot ducks the animals go straight over/around them and they will always miss as they are not commited to the one animal, well to make that story short, thanks to the pattern on the animals the predator was not able to turn the animal into animal pie. That is one of the main concepts of patterns, survivability. The other three are beauty, strenghth and order. Order is like the pattern you use in your day, for example, order is like the routine you use for your day, like what classroms use, they always use the same boring sequence for the day, but luckily for Enrich students, their day is always different in a way. Well, that is my post until next week. Please comment.
